we met with the Onc today and John had his first Opdivo treatment.

Opdivo was approved on a compassion request and will be given 1x every two weeks. The hope is that we will see a reduction in tumor size but will take stability with no new tumors. The side effects often do not come until the second or third treatment and unless he is symptomatic we will not scan until the sixth treatment so 12 weeks.

Blood work will be done every week to check his thyroid, liver function, CBC (platelet, wbc and rbc) and seems that there were a few other things. We are very very happy with the opportunity to take this journey.

Drug Therapy or Medication (Opdivo): The Dr. called today and and my husband will start Opdivo on Monday as a 2nd line treatment for his SCLC. We are so excited for this opportunity. Praying that he responds as well as our NSCLC brothers and sisters.

Bone Scan came back clear. YAY! Liver Biopsy results list the tumor in the liver as Small Cell Lung Cancer. Since this type of cancer spreads in multiple tumors the Dr. is puzzled. She is ordering another MRI scan to be done using a special liver dye that may expose or pick up smaller tumors IF they are present. If this scan comes back and there are still no other tumors then there is a radiation treatment that they can do to rid that single tumor without Chemo. If the scan comes back with multiple tumors we will revisit the treatment plan. The confusion and testing and waiting is beginning to take a toll on us. I pray for patience!

my husband was unable to have his biopsy done yesterday due to his platelet count and some of the medications he is on that further complicates his clotting ability. He has been rescheduled for next Tuesday.

My husband will have a blood transfusion in the morning to build platelets before he has a CT guided Liver Biopsy to determine if the tumor on his liver is SCLC that has spread or a second independent cancer.
