Hello, I noticed that you had a DIEP reconstruction recently. You note minimal recovery, etc. I was wondering if you would tell me something about your surgery. It is my only option for reconstruction and I was told it was extremely painful, a long recovery/ rehab time and it would be almost a year out of my life before I felt normal again. Also, it was a 12 hr surgery. Was any of this true for you? I would appreciate any info you could give. Thank you and I hope you are having a great day.

Hi my name is Millie, and I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction surgery. I was diagnosed in September with dcis and had surgery in December. I have to be honest and say yes it is a long surgery, my surgery lasted 14 hours because I had a deep flap done at the same time, and the reason for that was I wanted everything done At one time. I have been home for six months now and it has been tough, but I'm glad I decided to do it that way because I couldn't see myself going back for more surgery. I still don't feel normal. It just like you I have been told it will probably be a year before that happens so I'm hanging in there and hoping it will get better... The only other surgery I might need is my nipples which I'm not sure yet on which way to go with that. I hope this helps a little, but remember its your decision and only yours to choose what you think is best for you.
Good luck, and stay positive it helps with the recovery.
