Radiation (External radiation ): The actual radiation treatment was painless BUT the side effects are very uncomfortable. Because my tx was in the pelvic area, I have had redness, open sores to my peri/rectal area, very painful urinary and rectal discomfort for 3-4 weeks during and after completing tx. I found that tight fitting clothing is not an option, going “butt naked” was very beneficial while at home, of course I used a sarong to cover up. Sitting outside in the fresh air helped with generalize comfort. I used baby wipes for obvious reasons, Sitz baths daily 3-4 times a day, lidocaine gel to the rectal area helped somewhat but no matter what, the pain in your rectal area can be excruciating. Oxycodone was prescribed but really didn’t provide much pain relief. Abdominal cramps was another problem upon eating and defecating. Finally ( much to my dismay) I tried cbd oil (sublingual) and “edibles”. I have to say, I didn’t rely on the oxycodone after this. My abd cramps went away, my appetite improved and felt that I can move around much better. The pain to my rectal area still existed, unfortunately. My urinary pain completely went away, thanks to the edibles that have curcumin, a derivative of turmeric. I’m 3 weeks out of radiation tx and feel each day is better but do have occasional setbacks with pain. I’m told this will eventually get better.

I'm sorry you're going through so much with radiation. I was the luckiest of the unlucky and had very few, mild side effects. I've had a late effect of some urinary incontinence, but it's totally manageable. I've been using CBD oil for post surgery pain and anxiety and it has made a tremendous difference. I've heard that these side effects eventually go away. Good luck.
