This is PROOF that just because you have a PHD or MD next to your name doesn't mean you are creative enough to come up with new ideas. A Great New idea can come from anywhere. I'd offer a Million Dollar reward for ANYBODY who comes up with a NEW idea that can cure cancer or other illnesses. White Coat Superiority can be dangerous.
Some of the greatest inventions came from just some guy in a garage or bedroom. The Google and Facebook guys dropped out of college....didn't seem to hurt their creativity. Creativity and Imagination does NOT always equate to intelligence or degrees from Harvard....ugh

Necessity being the mother of invention... this story has always intrigued me. A father, looking to save his sons life.

"To keep 5-week-old Casey alive, a needle had to be inserted each day through the soft spot in his skull to remove the excess fluid. Dr. Spitz told Holter about his shunt. He also told him about the problems with the valve and the high likelihood of failure. Holter headed home, locked himself up in his garage, and three weeks later emerged with the first prototype of what would later be called the Spitz-Holter shunt."
