I do not know about taste buds because I was on a nasal feeding tube during during treatment and for some months after. What I did suffer from was painful mouth sores and I have severe dental problems. Demand that your medical team take care of your mouth. I use biotene as a mouthwash. As for the taste buds they are only part of the story we eat with all our sense. All the time I was being fed by a tube, I watched the food channel. I learned a lot. Presentation is everything. Make your meals colorful. (by the way vegetables with the most color are the most nutrious) Fresh herbs are wonderful and good for you. You can grow them in a very small space. Also herbs add a beautiful aroma to cooking. Smell your food. Participate in the preparation of your food as much as possible. Season your food properly. Enbrace the whole eating experience even enjoying music during your meals.

It took about a month for me. It returns in stages. It's been about 12 weeks since the last treatment and I still only have about 1/3 of taste buds that work.
The regimen of Chemo/radiation did not for me. headed to Stanford for Surgery today.
      Good luck to you.

I got radiation treatments to my neck last year, and I still have dry mouth, although it is better. Stay hydrated! I carry a big water bottle wherever I go. My oncologist recommended Salagen to help with saliva, but it made me sweat profusely, so I couldn't take it. My sister-in-law, a long term cancer survivor, swears by it. My sense of taste has improved, but it is still not at 100%, but I can enjoy what I eat a little more now. I had dental problems before radiation and wore an upper denture and needed work on my lower teeth. They just pulled them all, as healing is very different after radiation. The denture part sucks, but I'm glad I chose that route. Best of luck to you on your journey!
