Chia seeds are a great alternative for flaxseed which does have phytoestrogens, OOPS apparently this is untrue. I found this blog with research from UCSF sighted below.. According to them chia seeds are fine but flax seeds are better. Apparently flax seed oil is the culprit being a phytoestrogen and bad for ER+ BC. This is from the blog and has the articles' address.
I first got into Flax because I was triple neg and there are many studies that show that GROUND FLAX SEEDS have an effect on EGFR- the epidermal growth factor receptors - that are found in TN cancer and also in Her2 cancer.
The confusion comes from Flax SEEDS and Flax OIL.
Since my second cancer was ER+ I was worried that I couldn't take the flax seeds anymore.
Apparently, the Flax Oil supplements are what the nutritionists are worried about because it is a weak, phyto estrogen, which is under controversy for those of us on endocrine therapy.
The oil supplementation can get out of hand, and that is most likely where the confusion comes from resulting in a ban on all flax. But the SEEDS are good for all cancer survivors. Whether TN or ER+.
Ground Flax seed is a potent fiber addition to your diet. Studies have shown that a diet high in fiber reduces serum estradiol levels in women.
The best review of Flax seeds I found from the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center University of California, San Francisco
