Who has made the determination that they are in their final days or weeks? Also, what reason is being giving as the disqualifying factor? If your insurance company doesn't cover hospice you will have to seek other means for payment. A good place to start is the Hospice Association of America. Below is a link to their website.

You get into Hospice through your doctor--to my understanding this is the only way into Hospice. If your doctor has given the outlook to be weeks, then please speak to him/her for the Hospice info to get in. My heart goes out to you.

ShadowCG, I amxan oncolgy/end of life nurse and if the patient does not meet the criteria for hospice then you have the option of palliative care. You cannot contract with hospice without an order for hospice from a physician. You have to keep in mind that hospice care is 100% covered by medicare and insurances usually have that clause as well. If a doc writes the order and the patient does not expire within that time frame or if the doc does not renew the order before the 6 months he can be charged with medicare/insurance fraud. That is why docs take that order so seriously. Best of luck to you, Carm RN.
