No cancer is great news, sundance!
Like BuckeyeShelby said, I'm sure that news is very jarring compared to the diagnosis you were expecting. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask your doctor until your prognosis has been thoroughly explained to you. If your doctor isn't willing to more thoroughly explain something, a second opinion is never a bad idea, and you are entitled to it! After all, it is your life, your body and your potential (or maybe not!) fight.

Just because you have a mass doesn't mean it is malignant.

sundance, A CT scan only sees differences in tissue density and can not tell if a dense area is cancer or not. There are a lot of things that can look like cancer in a CT scan that are not cancer. The biopsy is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis so now you have the good news. There is still a question of what the 1.7 cm mass really is aand if it needs to be treated or not. Did the Dr tell you what the biopsy showed the mass to be other than just telling you it was not cancer? It coupld be a lot of things from a cyst to scar tissue from your old injury. If you don't know what it is try calling the Dr to get him to tell you what it is. If you need to make another appointment. Congratulations on the good lews and we all hope and pray that the rest of the news is good too.

Dr said there was no cancer after biopsy. I don't understand that. The CT scan w/contrast showed 1.7 mass and said it was growing into other areas and was probably SCC. Can someone explain this to me?

Is it always nessary to have radiation? You would think after surgery they could at least keep it to just a minimum amount to alleviate the bad side effects? Does it always have to be 7 weeks? How long are they keeping you on it Happy?

I've only just started this journey. I went in for an MRI of my cervical spine and waited a week before I made the appointment to see my doctor for the results. I knew my neck was in bad shape because of a severe injury many years ago. I wasn't expecting anything other than neck problems and maybe surgery to help that but when he said they found something else in my throat and that I needed to see an ENT doctor the focus changed in one second. Suddenly my biggest problem wasn't my spine, even though it was in real bad shape. Nobody said the word cancer but I knew that’s what they were thinking. Something I'm not used to getting from people is looks of pity and extra special kindness as though they were looking at a dead man walking. When I walked out of the office my mind was reeling and I had to stop and think. I knew I could have a very serious problem and I knew it was going to take some time to figure out what exactly that problem was. The choice I had was, I could worry myself sick for the next month or so or not worry myself sick. What good would worry do? It’s possible it might not be cancer but even if it is, worrying is not going to change that fact. It’s impossible to completely block it out of your mind but if you just keep moving and do what you have to do, stay busy, go to work do all the normal things you do and not dwell on it, it makes a world of difference.

It took a 2 more weeks to get into see the ENT Doctor. When he looked with his scope, he could not tell exactly what he was seeing or he didn’t want to say at that point what he was seeing, although he said there was a lump and one side of my vocal cords wasn’t working. He wanted me to have a CT scan with contrast to be sure. It took another 10 days or so before they called me to come in for those results. It’s seemed to me that time was kind of a buffer for bad news and cushioned the blow quite a bit. When the doctor said there is a mass 1.7 centimeters I was prepared and not completely shocked. Now 10 more days later I’m having a biopsy done on the 20th I’m not sure how many days will pass before they give me the results of that. I know there is a lot more waiting in the future but I refuse to worry about it anymore.

I agree completely with the not worrying thing. And yes, it's very hard to do. One of my favorite quotes is that Worrying today will not remove tomorrows trouble, but only rob you of today's peace. I also always tell me wife to not worry about anything until there is something to worry about.
On the waiting, I know about that too. On my last of the three diagnoses I've had, I had to wait 2 months to get in to my Oncologist/Ent specialist after my biopsy results. That was a hard wait. But then, when I got in, it was all good, the doctors were very confident that this wasn't anything they couldn't handle, they gave me a plan, we done it, and I'm now 4 years out.

This will be you too. Let us know if we can help with anything on the site.

I guess my time line is a little faster than most, I'm lucky too that I have health insurance. I'm trying to find the bright side to everything. Thank you for your support. You must be one tough cookie to have to deal with this stuff 3 times. I hope I can be as strong as you are.
