Decision Point (Whether or not to have chemotherapy again): I've already done 12 rounds of chemo, they removed a 3.5 cm tumor from my sigmoid colon one year ago. They removed 5 infected lymph nodes. I am stage 3 w/5 infected lymph nodes. I watched my mother die a horrible death in 1988 of cancer (lung cancer), she did chemo and radiation 3 times and the cancer still got her. I don't think I want any more chemo as I feel if it comes back, it will keep doing so as I am stage 3 colorectal cancer patient. I am 49 years old, no one in my family that I know of ever has had colorectal cancer. There have been family members who've died of cancer. This is why my thinking leads me to believe we have some sort of mutated gene in our family somewhere. Whenever someone has gotten cancer in our family (in the past) no one has gotten through it and survived no matter what type of cancer it was. Both my parents died quite young from disease. My mother cancer, my father sudden fatal heart attack, she was 49, he was 54. I want quality of life over quantity now that I have the disease of cancer. I feel that it's going to be back just don't know when. Everyday waiting for the bomb to go off wondering when my doctors will tell me the cancer is back. They haven't removed my chemo pump yet nor do they want to for awhile yet. As I am pretty much dealing with this on my own I'm not sure if I'm making the right decision because if there is a chance to beat this I really need to know about it. All I know is that they found the tumor by mistake and if they hadn't found it last year when they did I wouldn't be here right now. Everyday I have from then out has been a gift to me and I am grateful for what I do have. Is there any real chance of surviving such a awful disease as stage 3 colon cancer ? What are my real options as the doctors aren't telling me much. I had the first major surgery July 2012 when they found the cancer tumor, they took it out and did a colostomy which I had for 8 months it was reversed March 2012.. So far so good everything seems fine so far.

I realize that it's my decision to make and no one else's. All I'm asking for is comments/suggestions, support. Thanks for being there

Hello, Survivor! I think reoccurrence fears run amok among all of us, the trick is figuring out how to manage those fears and put them aside for the times when you can. Think of how far you have come, did you ever believe you could have done all that? It's truly an amazing accomplishment! Have you ever tried a support group? They can be so reassuring...you hear from people who can relate to what you have just endured. I found the support group at Duke to be so very helpful in terms of putting things in perspective for me. They are usually free of charge and offered by the hospital or clinic. And to answer your question....yes, there is always real hope of surviving, just look around this site and you will see!

Side Effects (Chemo brain): How long does this last? I've finished my 12 rounds of chemo in February 2012 and I still have major brain lapses remembering things
