I have an area in my throat that dries out and becomes uncomfortable during the night. For me one swallow of water works for a while. If my throat is painfully dry I use Biotene a dry mouth oral rinse that may be used five times a night.

Biotne is good. It has a lot of products. But I started using ACT mouthwash for dry mouth on the suggestion of my dental hygeinest. It only needs to be used twice a day. I have had dry mouth since my thyroid surgery and RAI. Maybe a glass of water at your bedside to sip on during the night when it wakes you up.

My cancer wasn't thyroid, the first two were Hodgkins disease. After having the first surgery to remove the affected lymph node I had radiation, chemo and a score of other surgeries. 6 months after treatments were done, another lymph node was malignant again.

Kinda sorta the same, only different.

Then 18 years later had a totally different type, malignant tonsil.

      Hi,
I had stage 4 thyroid cancer in the mid 1970's and then I had another tumor show up next to my heart 30 years later in 2005. Thyroid cancer can be difficult to get all of the tumors from the neck the first time - I had 5 surgeries the first time over a four year time to remove all the tumors. It was very far advanced by the time it was found.
The Thyroid is called by the endocrine system and if your thyroid levels are not high enough another cell (in my case a lymph node) can become a thyroid tumor. However with a good endocrinologist you can keep an eye on your levels and catch it early. I have the thyrogen and scans every 2 - 4 years depending on what my bloodwork shows. I have lived with this for over 40 years - Tracy

Last week I went in for a pre-procedure appt. and blood work with a new doctor (long story short: My last Endo made me feel like an idiot and b/c I'm a woman it's my fault.)....his initial consult included talking about how sometimes all of the cells aren't responsive during the first round of RAI. He said from the neck ultrasound and the first scan, he expected a higher dose of RAI this time because of the mass in my neck and the spot on my liver and ovary. So, ok. I expected that. Well, I stared the LID diet, and went in for the RAI diagnostic dose and two days later, for the scan. Where they found no active thyroid cells. at all. I was in shock. Honestly, it's not what he expected either. He explained that sometimes the scar tissue is mistaken for 'hot beds'.

I guess I'm sharing that because, well, I completely understand the frustration. If, after they do the body scan, they find bad news, the doctors are equipped to handle it. But what if they don't? What if (like in my case), the tests aren't accurate up to that point? Either way, there is hope through the frustration.

The part I hate most about having Thyroid cancer is that it does come back. It seems to be a matter of time. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. If you feel you need a second opinion, please go get one. You need to be at peace about what is going on in your body and about how your cancer is being treated.

My new provider has kept me hypo since seeing her (surgery 11/12; discover of cancer and second surgery 11/12; RAI 1/13; doctor switch 4/13; neck ultrasound 4/13; RAI 8/13; good news 8/13....fully expect cancer to come back again-daily)
