Newly diagnosed kidney cancer. What to expect when I see the urologist? I am a two time breast cancer survivor.

theresarae - I'm so sorry about your diagnosis. I had a nephrologist take care of me. But my RCC was very complicated because the tumor had spread into my heart. A lot of what will happen to you will depend mostly on the location and size of the tumor. How was it found? Mine was discovered in 2006 and I had to have it removed after the tumor in the heart was suctioned out and repaired. They said I had had mine for many years. There was no saving it. During the surgery when the right kidney was being removed the nephrologist/surgeon could see a very small tumor on the remaining kidney. I had already been under far too long so it was decided to address the 2nd one at another time. It took a long time to recover before I felt like doing it - in August of the next year. All went well and I was clear for four and a half years. Then another was found on my quarterly tests. This one could not be operated on so they started me on oral chemo. A drug called Sutent. I've had no further reoccurrence. I know very little about breast cancer except what I've read here or in print elsewhere. I did have one girlfriend with it and she was really phenomenal. She had no choice but to continue to work and she did. She was given Tamoxifen if I remember correctly. It's 15 years now and she is well. I believe I know what po18guy is referring to in his post. Although I have had no more kidney issues I have had nodules appear in my lungs and lymph node. Although the cancer is in my lungs it is still referred to as kidney cancer. I don't know if cancers of a breast are likely to manifest themselves in a kidney or, as he suggests, it may be a totally separate event. After having gone through what you have previously, I hesitate to say - please choose your medical team wisely. When you learn more do let us know. We are here for you.

Ask how many RCC patients he has handled and how many nephrectomies he has performed. Will the surgery be open or laparoscopic? How big is the tumor on your kidney? Ask them to do a ct of your chest abdomen and pelvis to determine if it has spread. What is the complete treatment plan? Before making decisions try to get to an RCC specialist. They have the up to date information on treatment. Where are you located?

I am located in Vancouver, Washington. Across the river is Portland, Oregon. The cancer was discovered with a Preventative CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvic area. I had expanded genetic testing . It was found that I have two gene mutations. Thank God for this testing. Without it I would of never had the scan thus never found the kidney cancer. My first urologist appt is this Wednesday . Thank you all so much.
