I signed up on this site as a caregiver for my husband with stage IV lung cancer. He passed away in June 2016, leaving me with a 5yo daughter. Just after Christmas, I was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine that has apparently spread to my heart and ovaries. My daughter and I have moved in with my mom.

Now it's your turn to fight. Take each day at a time, remembering to seek medical staff that will truly help you with potential clinical trials that may slow down the progression. It's great that you have Mom to help with your journey. We are also here to help.

I am so sorry to learn of your battles - Praying for a happy outcome. As to what you can do to help ensure that, if you aren't already being treated at a large teaching hospital associated with a major university, then you are in the wrong place. You want to be where they have a team in place, a team of doctors who have worked together on many cases such as yours, and who have training in the latest treatment techniques. The doctors there will treat more cases per year than your local doctors will in a lifetime - you want that experience working for you. You aren't too far from Springfield to make the drive for treatment -- I drove 3 hours each direction for my treatment and it was worth every mile. I am sure I would not be here today if I had received treatment locally.

Loss (Lost loved one): My husband passed away in June 2016. He had just had scans and his doctor called me a couple of days later to give me results. His cancer had not spread and there was no indication of why he passed.

Oh No (Cancer has spread/Metastasized): Surgeon only saw localized cancer, but PET scan showed spread to heart and ovaries.
