With esophageal cancer, I went quickly from 185 down to 140. I had to force myself to eat anything, and having nausea didn't help. I bought a juicer and juiced fruits and vegetables and ate oat meal a lot. Even after the surgery, I had a feeding tube, my appetite was non existent. It took a few months for me to finally start some weight coming back. Watch his blood pressure, I was on blood pressure pills and well not any more. I lost the high B.P. and lowered my trigliserides, when I lost that extra weight.

Weight gain shakes (Ensure, Scandishakes, Muscle Milk) add calories. You can use the shake mix in a smoothie with whatever he'll tolerate, fruit, peanut butter, cocoa, even green veggies. It all adds calories and nutrition, but the shake is easier to eat and digest. As gdytko also said, juicing is good, too, and even easier to get it down while keeping up the nutrition.

I use the nutritional shake ensure plus 350 cal. I put it in my cream of wheat and add butter (100 cal per tbs). All this is hard to eat if you have not appetite. Build up your appetite (may have to force a little), I did it at 3oz of food throughout the day. Also, if you are nauseaus, there's good meds for that, and that helped me get over the smell & tastes of foods. That was the beginning (3 mos ago), for me. I am now eating full meals & some in-between snacks. I look at everything that has calories or protein. Need that muscle mass so you don't feel so weak.
