What kind of treatment did you have? My saliva glands were badly damaged by radiation treatment causing my to be unable to eat without some kind of liquid. I have had this issue for almost 40 years. I have found some great sugar free hard candies, my new favorite are from Russel Stovers, there are some really good sprays to help as well. I don't know if this is what you are experiencing but I hope it helps, Tracy (Olson)

I had 35 radiation treatments and 3 chemo treatments over 6 weeks beginning in January 31, 2011 for cancer of the base of the tongue. I lost the ability to swallow half way through February and of course had a feeding tube. I began swallowing therapy mid April, flunked a modified barium swallow test in early June 2011 and then passed another in early August 2011. In August 2011 I was on a "baby food" diet and had the tube removed September 28, 2011. I only lost about ten pounds but was putting eight ounces of Scandishake in my tube every three hours. My therapist said patients might be able to get their swallowing back sooner if they saw a therapist before they lost their swallowing. Insurance does not pay for this but I don't think it costs much. Don't wait till you are unable to swallow to use the tube. It is going to save your life. Stick with your exercises. I wake up with a dry mouth a few times every night and eat slower than everybody but I eat everything.

I didn't have any trouble swallowing when I first recovered from surgery, radiation and etc, but lately I have been. It seems that when I am eating I have to (get a run at it) to get my throat muscles to respond. If I take a drink it seems help me swallow, but solid food is very difficult. I wish I could tell you what to do about it, but if you find out, pass your answer on to me please.

      Hi Tracy,

Yes I have issues with this. I am 8 years out from treatment. I have had my throat stretched about 5 times but it is still very small. I always have to ask whether meds can be crushed. Iron can not be crushed so I take it in liquid form when I need it. I do have a very small thyroid pill I am able to get down, but it does get stuck from time to time and I have to be very careful.

I too am having swallowing problems. It's been a little over a year and I got the feeding tube removed 5 months ago. Like most of you here I have to find foods that will slide down easy. Yesterday I was celebrating my birthday with friends at the Red Lobster and I ordered shrimp and linguini and I choked on the shrimp. Not fun. I also have a burning sensation in my throat, does any one have this problem?

I had radiation therapy that ended 2 months ago and still have swallowing problems. I also have a very swollen tongue. Still have the Cancer and am headed to surgery as final option on 12-19.
