My BS/PS put on the surgical bra at the time of the surgery. I had to keep it on for one week. The PS's nurse then told me what bra to buy and I had to wear it 24/7 for a month. After that I didn't wear a bra anymore and still don't (I had a bilat).

They will put one on you during surgery. It helps reduce swelling.

I had a bilateral mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction in October 2014 and fat grafting in October 2015. Both times I wore surgical bras and found them incredibly helpful. I have a stock of them now and am keeping them just in case I require further fat grafting. The compression that they provide really helps with pain and swelling and there is no way that I would have been able to get a sports bra over my head. I would recommend them. Also compression for my abdomen and thighs following DIEP flap and the lipo from the fat grafting was also essential. Good luck.

Sorry should just add as well that if you haven't had the surgery yet, I would also highly recommend taking Arnica Montana pills for a week before surgery.

There was another guide which I found helpful but I cannot find the link at the moment. I also wish that I had bought a few hospital gowns for home afterwards as getting things off and on was tough and having crazy hot flashes as a result of chemo, it was important that I could have as much air as possible to my body as I really wasn't used to them then.

I did not have to wear a surgical bra after my Mastectomy/reconstruction. They did have me well wrapped with an ace bandage for quite awhile. Eventually when the swelling went down, they told me I could wear a regular bra again.
