It's up to you but a small token would be appropriate.

Every year, I make a contribution in their honor (doctor and nurses) to the medical center. I receive a very nice thank you from the director of fundraising and my oncologist thanks me when I go in for my appointment, so I know he is notified of the contribution. It's tax deductible and it makes me feel good that I am contributing to the hospital that saved my life.

My husband is still seeing his oncologist, but we made a contribution to the hospital Foundation for the Cancer Center in his honor. Similar to IKickedit Congratulations to valpack13!
